Rich opportunities for your clinical trials are emerging increasingly in non-traditional markets. But diverse regulatory requirements and varying timelines may be keeping you from exploring opportunities in these regions. How can you realize the potential recruitment advantages, cost-savings and efficiencies?

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disorder for which there is no known cure. Fortunately in the last few years, a shift in strategy toward the earlier institution of disease modifying drugs and the availability of new classes of medications have greatly improved the outcomes that can be expected by most patients. The goal of treatment now aims toward achieving the lowest possible level of arthritis disease activity and remission if possible, the minimization of joint damage, and enhancing physical function and quality of life. The optimal treatment of RA requires a comprehensive program that combines medical, social, and emotional support for the patient. It is essential that the patient and the patient’s family be educated about the nature and course of the disease. Strategies are all aimed at reducing pain and discomfort, preventing deformities and loss of joint function, and maintaining a productive and active life. Inflammation must be suppressed and mechanical and structural abnormalities corrected or compensated by assistive devices. Treatment options include medications, reduction of joint stress, physical and occupational therapy, and surgical intervention.

Currently there are more than 90 known pneumococcal types; the ten most common types account for approximately 62 percent of invasive disease worldwide. Each year in the United States, there are an estimated 175,000 hospitalized cases of pneumococcal pneumonia.

The best way to protect against pneumococcal disease is through vaccination. There are two types of pneumococcal vaccine currently available: a polysaccharide vaccine and a conjugate vaccine. The polysaccharide vaccine is used in adults and the conjugate vaccine is used in children.

Importation of suspect/counterfeit pharmaceuticals from China is a tremendous problem in Nigeria. I think it is a significant step for the governments of Nigeria and India to tighten the documentation of pharmaceuticals produced in India, a well-regarded source of low cost, quality drugs for developing countries.

The next step in improving the quality and availability of pharmaceuticals in Nigeria is local manufacture. Imported drugs bear high tariff and increased risk of being counterfeit, being past expiration date, etc. Is anyone aware of Nigerian companies investing in or developing pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity?
